In Funding Stories, The environment & public spaces

Group: Earthwatch Europe
Project: Tiny forests
Grant: £10,000
Fund: General Fund

Working in partnership with Buckinghamshire Council, Earthwatch Europe planted Tiny Forests in some of Buckinghamshire’s most deprived areas. These areas were identified through the council’s Opportunity Bucks programme which aims to provide opportunities for people and improve local areas.

Addressing environmental and social inequalities, these vibrant, biodiverse green spaces have transformed urban landscapes and enriched the lives of residents. The Tiny Forests provide high-quality green spaces that improve air quality and mitigate flooding in areas where greenery is scarce. Beyond their environmental advantages, the Tiny Forests have united communities, creating a new found sense of belonging and connection.

Organised planting days saw enthusiastic participation from schools and community groups. The children gained valuable gardening skills and a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting our environment. By contributing to vital scientific research, the children felt inspired and empowered, encouraging their interest in the environment and sustainability.

Spending time in the Tiny Forests has significantly improved participants’ physical and mental well-being. Immersion in nature has left them feeling happier, healthier, and more connected to their surroundings. Participants are excited to watch their efforts flourish, symbolising a greener and brighter future for generations to come.

This grant specifically contributed towards training local volunteers and providing ongoing support for the communities to care for their Tiny Forests. Since the project began, they have engaged more than 800 Bucks residents, including school children and community groups, at the Planting Days and additional Discovery Days. They also have a group of over 30 fantastic volunteer ‘Tree Keepers’ who care for the Tiny Forests on a regular basis.
