Project: Prostate Cancer Awareness and Testing Days

Let’s Talk About Cancer Fund: £7,000

Chiltern Prostate Cancer Support Group are a patient led support group started in 2005, offering support and encouragement to men and their families affected by prostate cancer. The group run regular support groups and awareness days, as well as free testing days in Buckinghamshire.

With funding from Heart of Bucks’ Let’s Talk About Cancer Fund, the group were able to deliver free testing days in High Wycombe, during July and October this year. Over those two testing days, the group saw more than 450 men take the test. At least 50 of those men were then referred for further investigation due to early or even advanced signs of prostate cancer, potentially saving their lives.

Funding has also allowed the group to reach into diverse communities, by printing and delivering leaflets and flyers to Temples and Mosques in their local area. Thanks to this, the testing days have seen a much higher number of men attending from varied ethnic cultures and backgrounds, breaking down barriers and access to such important health services. According to the GFCT who supply the group with the tests and results, they have had the highest turn out of men from diverse ethnicities at any GFCT assisted testing day in the country.
