Group: Swan Community Hub
Project: Buckingham Summer Club
Grant: £1,625
Fund: Thematic – Isolation, Disadvantage & Poverty
For many families, the long summer holiday can be a time of financial strain, isolation, and anxiety about how to keep children engaged. The Buckingham Summer Club, supported by Swan Community Hub, is a lifeline for local families. With funding from Heart of Bucks, the Club offers free sessions filled with fun, learning, and connection.
Through crafts, sports, sensory experiences, and interactive entertainment, Buckingham Summer Club is a place of fun, learning, and genuine connection for both children and carers. From energetic sports to calming sensory play, creative crafts to engaging entertainment, every session offers something new and a chance create lasting memories together. Parents and carers learn new ways to engage with their children, gaining valuable skills to take home and use beyond the sessions. Each family is given a craft kit, a book, and a picnic bag, helping the joy continue beyond the sessions and further helping to ease the financial burden of the summer holiday.
The sense of community and belonging is especially powerful for families of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). A dedicated session creates a rare space of understanding, with tailored activities, a quiet room, and a truly welcoming atmosphere. Parents are able to relax, and children are free to engage at their own pace.
The support from Buckingham Summer Club enables children and families to thrive, giving them a welcoming and inclusive place to enjoy time together without worry.
Case Study
A mother of twin girls was amazed they had entered the hall, as they are both on the autistic spectrum and normally refuse to go into busy, loud places. The twins were happiest sitting at the colouring table, focusing on their drawings. Their mother was so pleased that they were able to focus on what they were doing, enjoy themselves and not worrying about the environment around them. They stayed for the entire session, leaving feeling accomplished, with their mother bursting with pride.
